On June 26, 2023, Victoria and David Beckham arrived by boat at the Château de Versailles for Jacquemus’ “Le Chouchou” Spring 2024 show, where their coordinated neutral looks offered two very different approaches to summer dressing.

David kept things relaxed in a beige linen suit layered over a white tank top, finishing the look with brown sandals and black sunglasses. Victoria went in the opposite direction with her footwear, pairing a pale blush slip dress with dark thigh-high peep-toe boots.

The shimmering dress came from Victoria Beckham’s Pre-Spring/Summer 2024 collection and featured thin spaghetti straps, an asymmetrical hem, and a sculptural rosette gathered at the hip. The look offered an example of the directional silhouettes that have helped establish Victoria Beckham as one of the best-known British fashion designers and brands.

Oversized black shield sunglasses added a harder edge to the soft pink dress, while delicate earrings, a diamond bracelet, and a large structured ostrich top-handle bag from her own label completed the outfit.

The most unexpected element was below the hem. Instead of the strappy sandals or pumps that might ordinarily accompany a lightweight summer dress, Beckham chose fitted thigh-high boots with peep toes and slender stiletto heels.

The boots created an almost continuous dark column up the leg before disappearing beneath the dress. That second-skin construction blurred the line between hosiery and footwear, while the exposed toes kept the otherwise substantial boots visually lighter.

At 5’4¼” (163.2 cm), Victoria Beckham has long used heels and streamlined clothing to alter the perceived proportions of her frame. Here, the uninterrupted line of the fitted boots emphasized that approach without relying on an especially short hem.

Simon Porte Jacquemus described staging the show at Versailles as a childhood dream, with the palace itself influencing the collection’s design.

The collection drew inspiration from Princess Diana and Marie Antoinette, mixing regal references with Jacquemus’s playful proportions. The title, “Le Chouchou,” translates roughly to “darling” or “favorite” in French and also refers to a scrunchie, reflected in the collection’s gathered, voluminous shapes.

Kendall Jenner was among the models who walked in the waterside presentation, where guests watched from rowboats along the Grand Canal.

Peep-Toe Boots Have Long Been Part of Victoria Beckham’s Style Vocabulary

The Versailles footwear may look unusual, but the basic idea has appeared repeatedly in Beckham’s wardrobe. In June 2012, she paired a Victoria Beckham Fall 2012 look with black Tom Ford knee-high leather peep-toe boots, combining a covered leg with an open toe more than a decade before the Jacquemus appearance.

Later that year, after presenting her Spring/Summer 2013 collection during New York Fashion Week, she stepped out in peep-toe booties created for the Victoria Beckham collection with Manolo Blahnik. She wore the same footwear shown on her runway, an early example of a practice that would become closely associated with her public wardrobe: wearing pieces from her own collections while they were still entering the fashion conversation.

That context makes the Versailles combination feel less like an isolated styling experiment and more like a continuation of Beckham’s established design language. She often juxtaposes clean, elongated silhouettes with an element that disrupts the expected proportions, whether through an asymmetrical hem, an exaggerated boot shaft, or footwear that combines characteristics of two familiar shoe categories.

The thigh-high peep-toe silhouette also appeared elsewhere in her Resort 2024 collection. Zoë Saldaña wore light-blue Victoria Beckham thigh-high peep-toe boots with an Alexander McQueen dress at a London screening of Special Ops: Lioness. Like Beckham’s darker pair at Versailles, Saldaña’s boots featured a close-fitting shaft, exposed toes, and a slender stiletto heel.

Why Jacquemus Keeps Drawing Celebrity Fans

Part of Jacquemus’ appeal is that the French label rarely treats luxury too seriously. Simon Porte Jacquemus has built a recognizable world around sun-soaked Mediterranean references, sculptural proportions, sensual dressing, playful accessories, and fashion shows staged in destinations that become part of the story themselves.

That visual language translates particularly well to celebrity dressing. A Jacquemus piece can be minimal from a distance but reveal something unexpected up close: a twisted heel, a geometric toe, an exaggerated bow, a tiny bag, or an unusual proportion. Kendall Jenner’s Jacquemus campaigns have leaned into the brand’s provocative, highly visual side, while stars including Selena Gomez, Demi Moore, Anne Hathaway, Emma Roberts, and Julia Roberts have brought its sculptural footwear to red carpets, press appearances, and fashion-week front rows.

The Versailles presentation captured that same tension between elegance and playfulness. Victoria Beckham’s thigh-high peep-toe boots may have been an unconventional choice for arriving by rowboat, but against Jacquemus’ theatrical setting, they made perfect sense.
