Shailene Woodley Takes Balmain’s Geometric Look From Gown to Shoes

By the 77th Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles on January 5, 2020, Woodley’s footwear had become considerably more architectural. She wore a custom blue-and-black Balmain sequin gown with a thigh-high slit and circular geometric detailing, keeping a pair of matching Balmain sandals clearly visible.

Woodley attended the ceremony in support of Big Little Lies, which was nominated for Best Television Series – Drama. Co-stars Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep also received acting nominations.

Celebrity makeup artist Alex Babsky complemented the gown with brushed-up brows, black eyeliner, mascara, smoky eye shadow, mauve lipstick, and a restrained flush of color on the cheeks.

Hairstylist Danilo pulled Woodley’s hair into a sleek ponytail with volume at the front, while manicurist Mel Shengaris used black Chanel Beauty polish.

She accessorized with Bulgari High Jewelry, including earrings, a ring, and a Serpenti bracelet.

The strongest connection between the dress and shoes came from their geometry. Woodley’s Balmain Spring 2020 sandals feature circular suede embellishments edged in silver-tone metal, transparent PVC panels, slim ankle straps, square toes, and rounded heels measuring approximately 3.5 inches.

Balmain footwear was already part of Woodley’s red-carpet history. At the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, she paired head-to-toe Balmain with black woven sandals from the French fashion house. Their interwoven leather-and-suede straps and slim stilettos offered an earlier example of her willingness to wear shoes with substantial visual detail.

Designed under Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s Spring 2019 Haute Couture collection drew on the circus and its performers. Woodley’s look translated that theme through a plunging black bodysuit layered beneath dotted tulle and mesh, with sheer sleeves, a pussy-bow neckline, and ribbon-trimmed panels extending over the legs.

Rather than matching that complexity at her feet, Woodley went in the opposite direction. Standing 5 feet 7¾ inches (172.1 cm) and wearing a US size 9 shoe, Woodley has moved between minimalist sandals, platforms, brogues, boots, and stilettos throughout her footwear history. The Pigalle Follies occupies a useful middle ground among Christian Louboutin’s best-known pointed-toe pumps. Its toe box is longer than the classic Pigalle but shorter than the elongated So Kate, while the silhouette retains a narrow tapered heel.

The look came during a particularly experimental stretch in Woodley’s red-carpet style. Working with celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger for the Big Little Lies premiere, Woodley combined sheer couture and an unconventional beauty look with one of the simplest shoe shapes in her wardrobe. This contrast appears repeatedly in her fashion history: complicated clothes do not necessarily call for complicated shoes.

Her earlier Louboutin appearances make that range particularly clear. At CinemaCon in 2014, Woodley swapped stilettos for white python Christian Louboutin Fred brogues with a Dolce Gabbana menswear-inspired outfit.

Woodley has also combined two of the labels seen here in a much more decorative way. Compared with the understated Pigalle Follies, the embellished platforms became a much more conspicuous part of the outfit.

Dior was also behind Woodley’s look at the Rocketman premiere during the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2019. She wore a black cashmere Spring 2019 Haute Couture ensemble with contrasting white lapels and cuffs, completing it with Boucheron jewelry and glossy black pointed-toe pumps.

Seen alongside the Big Little Lies premiere outfit, Cannes illustrates how Woodley repeatedly used straightforward black pumps beneath Dior’s more distinctive silhouettes.

At other premieres, she has taken the opposite approach and exposed much more of the foot. At the Los Angeles premiere of Divergent, Woodley paired Elie Saab with gold Stuart Weitzman Nudist sandals, a barely-there design built around little more than a toe strap, ankle strap, and slender heel.

Head-to-Toe Red: The Attico’s Feathers, Leather, and Pointed Pumps

At the Virgin Voyages Scarlet Night Party in New York City on February 24, 2019, Woodley moved away from black entirely in a bright red look from The Attico’s Spring 2019 collection. She paired a strapless feathered top with belted leather trousers and matching pointed-toe pumps.

The monochrome styling changes the role of the shoes. Rather than contrasting with the clothes, the red pumps continue the color uninterrupted to the floor, while their pointed toes provide a cleaner shape against the feather and leather textures above.

The Attico look also highlights a recurring element in Woodley’s fashion file: even when her clothes become theatrical, her footwear frequently returns to recognizable shapes such as pointed pumps and slim sandals.

From Barely-There Sandals to Sculptural Wedges: Woodley’s Shoe Style Keeps Evolving

Woodley’s later footwear choices continued to move between those two poles. At the 2025 Venice Film Festival, she paired Fendi and Kallmeyer looks with Roger Vivier and Gianvito Rossi sandals, returning to slim evening footwear.

In 2026, the shape became more unconventional again when tailored Kallmeyer separates were paired with Khaite Bella pointed-toe wedge pumps. The combination preserved the elongated front of a conventional pump while replacing the expected stiletto with a sculptural wedge.

Taken together, these appearances show why it is difficult to reduce Woodley’s shoe style to one signature silhouette. She has worn barely-there sandals, brogues, conventional pointed pumps, embellished platforms, woven stilettos, geometric PVC sandals, and sculptural wedges. What remains consistent is her willingness to let the relationship between shoe and clothing change: sometimes the footwear quiets a complicated outfit, while in other looks the shoe itself supplies much of the visual interest.

Why Pointed-Toe Pumps Work With So Many Red-Carpet Silhouettes

Woodley’s Pigalle Follies, Cannes pumps, and red Attico heels also illustrate why the pointed pump remains so persistent in evening dressing. The tapered front extends the visual line of the foot and gives both dresses and tailoring a sharply defined finish.
