At the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Opening Gala in Los Angeles on September 25, 2021, Lady Gaga showed two distinct sides of her style: Old Hollywood glamour on the red carpet and shimmering metallic drama for her performance later that evening.

For her arrival, Gaga wore a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture look by Daniel Roseberry, pairing a black velvet strapless column gown with a sweeping train and an oversized powder blue satin stole. The restrained black-and-blue palette provided an unexpected counterpoint to what lay beneath the skirt: towering black Pleaser platform boots.

The contrast was unmistakably Gaga. Instead of a conventional evening pump with the couture gown, she chose Pleaser’s Xtreme-1020 boots, a black vinyl style built on a 4-inch platform and an 8-inch spike heel. The towering design came from Pleaser Shoes, a brand closely associated with Gaga’s extreme-platform wardrobe. Later, she changed both the mood and the footwear, performing in silver Elie Saab Couture with metallic Jimmy Choo Anouk pumps.

Her blonde beehive, winged eyeliner, smoky eye makeup, and nude lip continued the vintage-Hollywood direction seen in many of Gaga’s most glamorous looks.

The towering boots fit Gaga’s long-running preference for extreme platform heels, but placing them beneath a Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown made the pairing especially striking.

As of August 2026, the Pleaser Xtreme-1020 remains available on Amazon in multiple finishes and sizes, with prices varying by color and seller.

Current listings for the ankle-high platform boot range from about $59 to $107. Availability and pricing can change, so shoppers should check the current listing before purchasing.

From Pleaser Platforms to Metallic Jimmy Choo Anouk Pumps

Inside the museum, Gaga changed direction for her performance. The velvet Schiaparelli gown and extreme black platforms gave way to a silver crystal-embellished organza gown from Elie Saab’s Fall 2020 Couture collection, designed with a halter neckline, thigh-high slit, and floor-length train.

She also switched jewelry houses, trading her Chopard diamonds for Bulgari earrings, a bracelet, and a ring.

The footwear changed with it. Instead of another oversized platform, Gaga wore metallic silver Jimmy Choo Anouk pumps.

The pointed-toe stilettos have a 120mm, or approximately 4.7-inch, heel, giving the performance look a much leaner silhouette than the Pleaser boots she wore on the red carpet.

The two outfits captured opposite sides of Gaga’s fashion vocabulary in a single evening: the Schiaparelli look paired classic Hollywood references with her long-standing love of extreme platforms, while the Elie Saab look turned toward silver, crystals, exposed leg, and a more traditional stiletto pump.

During her hour-long set, Gaga also performed a jazz interpretation of “New York, New York,” dedicating the song to filmmaker Spike Lee, who helped curate the museum’s Stories of Cinema exhibition.

Why Extreme Heels Are Essential to Lady Gaga’s Fashion Identity

For Lady Gaga, towering heels have never been simply about adding height. Extreme platforms are part of the character-building behind her fashion: they exaggerate her proportions, change the way she moves, and help transform a couture look into something unmistakably Gaga. From Alexander McQueen’s sculptural Armadillo shoes to 7-, 8-, and even 10-inch Pleaser platforms, footwear has repeatedly functioned as an extension of the visual worlds she creates for different albums, performances, red carpets, and public appearances.

At roughly 5’1″, Gaga can dramatically alter her silhouette with these gravity-defying shoes, but their importance goes beyond stature. She has worn extreme heels with everything from bodysuits and stage costumes to evening gowns and couture, often using an unexpected platform to disrupt an otherwise traditional fashion moment. Her black Pleaser Xtreme-1020 boots beneath Schiaparelli velvet at the Academy Museum gala are a perfect example: almost completely concealed by the gown, they still changed her height, posture, and physical presence.

That commitment has made towering footwear one of the most recognizable threads running through Gaga’s evolving style. The designers, heel heights, and silhouettes change, but the idea remains remarkably consistent: shoes are part of the performance.
