Kardashian–Jenner 2013 iHeartRadio Shoes: Red Céline, Saint Laurent & Aquazzura Amazon Sandals

Back in 2013, while Miley Cyrus was serving her usual dose of on-stage shock value in nipple pasties at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, the Kardashian–Jenner sisters were busy owning the off-stage fashion spotlight.

Kourtney, Khloé, Kendall, and Kylie turned up to support Miley in an all-black mix of leather, sharp tailoring, statement tops, and high heels, with each sister putting her own spin on the coordinated palette.

When Miley, wearing a white net dress with black nipple pasties, posed with the sisters, the photo captured several of the defining fashion signatures of the early 2010s in one frame.

Kim Kardashian did not attend the festival. She and Kanye West had welcomed their daughter, North West, on June 15, 2013.

Khloé Kardashian stayed with the black palette right down to her shoes. The super-skinny straps identify her heels as Saint Laurent “Jane” sandals, a minimalist style also worn by several other celebrities during the period.

Kourtney Kardashian’s tailored pants concealed most of her footwear, leaving her “Like a Virgin” tank to provide the statement detail. Kylie Jenner took a different approach, pairing black leather with intricate lace-up heels.

Kylie wore the Acne Studios Marla dress in black noir, a relaxed lambskin design with a curved hem, button front, and oversized banded sleeves. Its loose silhouette gave the leather mini a more androgynous feel than a conventional fitted leather dress.

Silver jewelry, red lipstick, and heavily lined eyes completed the look.

The real focal point was at Kylie’s feet. Aquazzura’s “Amazon” sandals wrapped slim black leather laces around the foot and ankle, adding an intricate silhouette to the otherwise pared-back black outfit.

The Amazon became one of Aquazzura’s recognizable lace-up designs of the era. Kate Upton later wore Aquazzura Amazon heels to a Met Gala after-party, while Fergie chose the lace-up style for the 2017 Miss Universe pageant.

Kylie’s polished iHeartRadio heels were only one side of her footwear style in 2013. Less than a month earlier, on August 27, she was photographed leaving a gym in Los Angeles in a far more casual combination: a black “Twerk” muscle tank, gray heathered faux-leather sweatpants from Lily White, and black Steve Madden “Troopa” combat boots.

The slogan also connects the outfit to the Miley Cyrus-centered pop-culture moment surrounding the iHeartRadio appearance. “Twerk” had become one of 2013’s most recognizable pop-culture references, while Kylie’s outfit translated the moment into an off-duty uniform of an oversized graphic tank, relaxed pants, and lace-up boots.

Lovers + Friends sold the tank, but the footwear provides the more enduring style reference. Steve Madden’s “Troopa” was a military-inspired leather combat boot distinguished by its lace-up front, cap toe, low stacked heel, and practical ankle-high silhouette.

The Troopa was also offered in neutral leather finishes including brown and stone, retaining the same cap-toe construction, lace-up front, and low heel.
