At the world premiere of Disney’s live-action Mulan on March 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Christina Aguilera arrived in one of the evening’s more divisive looks: a custom Galia Lahav gown paired with glossy red latex thigh-high platform boots by British footwear label Gina.
The towering pair was characteristically Aguilera — statement platform boots have long been part of her red-carpet style.

Styled by Karen Clarkson, the outfit played almost entirely with saturated shades of pink and red. Aguilera’s silk Galia Lahav gown featured a hot-pink long-sleeved bodice with a plunging V-neck, an oversized bow at the waist, and a cherry-red wrap skirt cut with a high thigh slit.
Instead of the pumps or barely-there sandals typically paired with a formal gown, Clarkson continued the color story with Gina’s towering red latex thigh-high platform boots. The unexpected pairing put the footwear squarely in focus whenever the wrap skirt opened at the leg.

The unconventional footwear choice became the most polarizing part of the outfit. The glossy latex and exaggerated platform created a sharp contrast with the formal silk gown, making the boots impossible to treat as a supporting accessory.
Gina has brought that same statement-making approach to very different red-carpet shoes: Helen Mirren has worn the label’s Swarovski-embellished Cristina booties, while Rosamund Pike stepped out in Gina’s satin Sasha mules with crystal-covered heels. Aguilera’s red latex thigh-highs pushed the British label’s more theatrical side even further.

Her jewelry was equally dramatic. Aguilera wore Stephen Webster’s 18k white-gold Magnipheasant long drop earrings, set with black spinels and pavé diamonds and valued at more than $25,000, alongside a silver Jennifer Fisher ear cuff. A high topknot, red-streaked bangs, and a bold red lip carried the gown-and-boots color palette through the rest of the look.
The appearance also brought Aguilera’s history with Mulan full circle. After recording “Reflection” for Disney’s 1998 animated film, she returned for the 2020 live-action adaptation with a new version of the song and “Loyal Brave True,” written by Jamie Hartman, Harry Gregson-Williams, Rosi Golan, and Billy Crabtree.
Aguilera has linked the original “Reflection” to landing her first record deal and described “Loyal Brave True” as exploring the balance between “vulnerability and strength.” The premiere was also among Hollywood’s final major red carpets before pandemic restrictions disrupted Mulan’s theatrical rollout, with the film ultimately arriving through Disney+ Premier Access in September 2020.
