At 5’2½” (158.8 cm) and wearing a US shoe size 8, Amanda Seyfried showed two very different approaches to pointed-toe pumps during Oscar weekend in March 2018.
She wore crystal-covered Christian Louboutin “Degrastrass” heels with Oscar de la Renta at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, after stepping out the previous day in sleek nude patent pumps with Alexander McQueen at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
At the Vanity Fair celebration in Beverly Hills on March 4, Seyfried’s footwear was unmistakably decorative: Christian Louboutin’s transparent Degrastrass pumps are covered with sparkling crystal embellishments around the toe and heel. One day earlier in Santa Monica, she chose a much quieter nude patent pump. While that pair has sometimes been associated with Rupert Sanderson, we have not found sufficient confirmation of the designer and therefore leave the Spirit Awards shoes unattributed.
Christian Louboutin Degrastrass Pumps With Oscar de la Renta

For the Vanity Fair party, Seyfried paired her Louboutin heels with a strapless, tea-length Oscar de la Renta Fall 2018 gown featuring intricate black-and-white lace embroidery.

She completed the look with a statement diamond necklace and Christian Louboutin’s “Degrastrass” pumps. The transparent pointed-toe shoes are embellished with crystals that become denser around the toe and heel, creating a floating, gradient-like sparkle. The detailing also picked up the shine of her necklace without introducing another competing color to the black-and-white gown.
The Degrastrass was not unique to Seyfried: Jessica Chastain has also worn Christian Louboutin’s crystal-covered Degrastrass pumps, offering another look at how the transparent style works with formal eveningwear.

Seyfried has returned to Christian Louboutin for several very different red-carpet looks. At the 2015 Tony Awards, she paired another Oscar de la Renta design with Christian Louboutin “Maltaise” pointed-toe pumps, a more structured style distinguished by crossover straps and an ankle fastening.
Oscar de la Renta has also remained part of her wardrobe beyond this 2018 appearance. In 2022, she wore an aqua ensemble from the fashion house with platform sandals at Variety’s Power of Women event, showing a very different way of pairing the designer’s clothing with height-boosting footwear.
Nude Patent Pointed-Toe Pumps With Alexander McQueen
The previous day, Seyfried took a more understated approach to footwear at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

She wore a white sleeveless Alexander McQueen dress with lace embroidery, a high neckline, and side cutouts, finishing the look with glossy nude patent pointed-toe pumps.

The pumps feature a sharply pointed toe, a low-cut vamp that reveals noticeable toe cleavage, and a slim stiletto heel. Although the shoes have sometimes been identified as Rupert Sanderson, we have not been able to independently confirm the designer. The available photographs also do not show Christian Louboutin’s distinctive red-lacquered outsole, so we would not attribute this pair to Louboutin.
The nude patent finish creates an almost continuous line from shoe to leg, while the closed-toe silhouette gives the intricate white lace dress a more substantial finish than a delicate sandal would have. Seyfried has worn both approaches elsewhere, including colorful Jimmy Choo “Tallow” sandals with an intricately detailed dress at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Why Crystal and Nude Heels Remain Red-Carpet Staples
Seyfried’s two Oscar-weekend looks highlight opposite approaches to evening footwear: one built around visible sparkle, the other around a nearly seamless nude finish. Both ideas have remained enduring parts of red-carpet dressing, whether the goal is to make the shoes a focal point or let them recede beneath a more detailed dress.
