On April 10, 2019, Scarlett Johansson attended the Avengers: Endgame fan event at Picturehouse Central in London, wearing an asymmetric black Tom Ford jumpsuit with classic black pointed-toe pumps. The understated shoes effectively countered the Spring 2019 design’s dramatic one-shoulder tailoring and plunging cutout neckline.

At 5’3″ (160 cm), Johansson frequently uses heels to complement her red-carpet proportions, as seen throughout our guide to Scarlett Johansson’s height, shoe size, and favorite heels. Here, however, the footwear was deliberately simple: the narrow pointed toes extended the clean line of her tailored trousers without competing with the architectural Tom Ford jumpsuit.

The sharp black-and-white palette continued through her accessories and beauty look. Johansson wore dangling Nikos Koulis earrings with black enamel and diamond detailing, along with a substantial geometric cuff bracelet on her bare arm.

Her center-parted hair was pulled tightly into an updo, while deep red lipstick added the look’s strongest color accent.

The jumpsuit came from Tom Ford’s Spring 2019 ready-to-wear collection and combined elements of a tuxedo jacket with tailored evening trousers.

A structured silk-satin lapel and long sleeve defined one side, while the opposite side was sleeveless, creating the asymmetric chest cutout that gave the otherwise traditional black tailoring its distinctive shape.

The trousers fell almost to the floor, leaving only the pointed toes and slim heels of Johansson’s black satin pumps visible.

That restraint worked particularly well with the outfit: rather than introducing another statement element, the shoes continued the tuxedo’s dark, streamlined silhouette.

Scarlett Johansson Pairs J. Mendel With Christian Louboutin Pumps in New York

Johansson took a softer approach at the American Museum of Natural History Gala in New York City on November 15, 2018, attending with Colin Jost in a dusty-pink J. Mendel Spring 2019 gown.

Styled by Molly Dickson, the look paired layers of pleated organza and tulle with subtle embellishment and a matching pink velvet ribbon at the waist. The floor-length skirt largely concealed her satin Christian Louboutin shoes, making their signature red soles a discreet contrast to the romantic pink gown.

Harry Winston diamond jewelry and a metallic gold clutch completed the evening look. Although the Louboutin pumps were mostly hidden beneath the long skirt, their classic shape suited the gown for much the same reason the black pumps worked with her Tom Ford jumpsuit: in both appearances, Johansson used streamlined footwear to support the clothing rather than compete with it.

From Classic Pumps to Statement Heels: Scarlett Johansson’s Red-Carpet Shoe Style

The Tom Ford and J. Mendel looks capture one constant in Scarlett Johansson’s red-carpet style: her shoes tend to work with the proportions of the clothes rather than fight for attention. Simple pumps disappear beneath long trousers or a floor-length gown, while shorter hemlines and cleaner silhouettes give her room to experiment with more distinctive footwear.

Across other appearances, that approach has ranged from leopard-print Christian Louboutin Iriza pumps with a red Vivienne Westwood gown to barely-there Jimmy Choo Minny sandals with metallic Erdem. She has also made shoes the statement, pairing sculptural Sophia Webster Flamingo pumps with a navy-and-black Proenza Schouler dress and building a Cannes wardrobe around Prada pumps, slingbacks, and platforms.
