Scarlett Johansson coordinated her dress and shoes down to the shade of red for the Marriage Story premiere at the 76th Venice International Film Festival in Venice, Italy, on August 29, 2019. She wore a custom red sequined gown by Celine by Hedi Slimane with custom-dyed red Stuart Weitzman Nudist sandals, creating an almost uninterrupted line of color from the strapless dress to its barely-there heels.

The Celine gown featured a structured sweetheart neckline, gathered and cross-draped detailing through the bodice, and a high left-leg slit that repeatedly brought the matching sandals into view as Johansson walked the red carpet. Its low, open back also left her large rose-and-lamb back tattoo fully visible.

At 5’3″ (160 cm) with a US shoe size 8.5, Scarlett Johansson has frequently turned to high heels for red-carpet appearances. Here, the barely-there construction of her sandals kept the footwear visually light beneath the fitted, floor-length gown while the matching red color extended the monochromatic effect.

Johansson kept the jewelry asymmetrical, wearing a diamond Ana Khouri earpiece alongside diamond jewelry from Harry Kotlar. The dangling chains added movement around her face, while her slicked-back wet-look hairstyle kept her shoulders and the strapless neckline unobstructed.

Johansson attended the premiere with Marriage Story co-stars Adam Driver and Laura Dern, producer David Heyman, and writer-director Noah Baumbach. The film, which follows a couple navigating the end of their marriage, premiered at Venice before its theatrical and streaming releases later in 2019.

Scarlett Johansson Matches Her Celine Gown With Stuart Weitzman Nudist Sandals

The monochromatic styling continued all the way to Johansson’s feet. Her Stuart Weitzman Nudist sandals were custom-dyed red to coordinate with the Celine gown rather than simply being a similar off-the-rack shade.

The Nudist’s minimalist construction — a slim toe strap, delicate ankle strap, and high stiletto heel — kept the footwear from competing with the sequined dress. The gown’s thigh-high slit also meant the sandals remained visible as Johansson walked, making the precise color match an important part of the overall look.

The silhouette has also outlasted this 2019 red-carpet moment. As of September 2026, Nordstrom carries Stuart Weitzman’s Nudist sandals in several variations, including the classic Nudist alongside Nudist II, block-heel, platform, and metallic versions.

This wasn’t Johansson’s first red-on-red outing in the Stuart Weitzman style. In 2017, she paired red Nudist sandals with a vintage strapless Yves Saint Laurent dress at the American Museum of Natural History’s Museum Gala in New York, using essentially the same tonal footwear strategy two years before Venice.

She had also worn a close relative of the Nudist in 2016, choosing Stuart Weitzman’s Nudistsong sandals in adobe aniline for the Variety Power of Women luncheon. Together, the appearances show how consistently Johansson has returned to slim, minimally strapped sandals for the red carpet.

Why Red-on-Red Heels Work With a Statement Dress

Matching the sandals closely to the gown avoided introducing another color at Johansson’s feet and preserved the long column of red created by the fitted silhouette. It’s a useful example of the monochromatic approach covered in our guide to choosing the best shoe colors to wear with a red dress: tonal footwear can extend the color from hem to toe, while slim straps keep an intense head-to-toe shade from feeling visually heavy.

Johansson’s look also shows why this combination keeps returning on the red carpet. The sequined Celine gown supplied the texture and shine, its thigh-high slit gave the shoes room to register, and the barely-there Stuart Weitzman sandals continued the color without competing with the dress. From sequined minis to column gowns, other red-on-red celebrity looks show how changing the heel shape, texture, or proportions can give the same monochromatic idea a very different finish.
