Nicole Kidman matched her custom ruby-red Atelier Versace gown with Giuseppe Zanotti “Thais” sandals at the 77th Golden Globe Awards on January 5, 2020, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

The Spring/Summer 2020 shoes combined red suede toe straps with extended ankle-wrap laces, 105mm (about 4.1-inch) stiletto heels, and vintage-inspired crystal brooches across the front.

At 5’10½” (179.1 cm), with some sources rounding her height to 5’11”, Kidman is already one of Hollywood’s taller leading women, yet towering heels have remained a consistent part of her red-carpet wardrobe. The Thais sandals suited that preference while keeping most of the foot exposed beneath the gown’s high slit.

Her Big Little Lies performance was nominated that evening for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama, while the series was also nominated for Best Television Series – Drama.

The custom Atelier Versace gown was cut as a strapless floor-length column with a structured architectural fold across the top of the bodice, a high slit along the right leg, and a trailing train. Rather than introducing another color at the foot, the red suede Thais sandals continued the gown’s monochromatic palette, while the crystal brooches supplied a small point of contrast whenever the slit revealed the shoes.

Kidman completed the look with geometric gold chandelier earrings by Indian high-jewelry designer Hanut Singh, vintage Fred Leighton rings, and an archival Omega Sapphette watch with a woven gold bracelet and small sapphire-crystal face.

Nicole Kidman’s Giuseppe Zanotti Thais Sandals

Part of Giuseppe Zanotti’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection, the Thais sandals were crafted in Italy with red suede at the toes, leather lining, long suede ties that wrapped around the ankles, and 105mm stiletto heels. Their most distinctive detail was the vintage-inspired crystal brooch attached to the front strap, treating the shoe almost like jewelry.

That decorative approach is particularly characteristic of Giuseppe Zanotti. Founded in 1994 in San Mauro Pascoli, Italy, the label became known for combining traditional footwear construction with metalwork, crystals, sculptural heels, and other jewelry-inspired details.

For Kidman, the Thais were also part of a longer relationship with the brand rather than an isolated red-carpet choice. At the 2017 CFDA Fashion Awards, she wore Giuseppe Zanotti Dionne sandals with crystal-embellished sculpted heels, another design that used sparkle as an architectural element rather than simple surface decoration.

The crystal embellishment also fits a broader pattern in Kidman’s footwear. At the 2019 Academy of Country Music Awards, she chose Alexandre Birman Clarita suede sandals with crystal-covered bows and tie-fastening ankle straps. In December 2019, less than a month before the Golden Globes, she wore Stella Luna Strass Chain sandals with rhinestone-encrusted straps to a Bombshell screening.

The recurring combination of exposed feet, narrow straps, ankle ties, and jewelry-like detailing helps explain why the Thais worked naturally within Kidman’s established evening-shoe wardrobe.

Kidman Continued Wearing Giuseppe Zanotti During Awards Season

The Golden Globes were not Kidman’s only Giuseppe Zanotti appearance that month. One week later, at the January 12, 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards in Santa Monica, she paired an embroidered Armani Privé couture gown with black patent Giuseppe Zanotti Farrah pumps.

The two designs approached crystal detailing very differently. The open Thais sandal placed its vintage-style crystal ornament prominently across the toes, while the closed Farrah pump kept its pointed upper relatively simple and concentrated the pavé crystals on the sculpted heel. Together, the appearances show two sides of Zanotti’s jewelry-influenced shoe design within the same awards season.

Nicole Kidman Switches to Chloé and Loafers at Gold Meets Golden

A day before the Golden Globes, on January 4, 2020, Kidman took a much more relaxed approach to footwear at the 7th Annual Gold Meets Golden brunch at the Virginia Robinson Gardens Estate in Los Angeles.

Instead of stilettos, she wore dark brown leather loafers with a Chloé Spring 2020 ensemble from Natacha Ramsay-Levi’s collection. The layered daytime look combined a multi-textured equestrian-motif top in blue, brown, and cream with a dark grey plaid knee-length wrap skirt worn over cropped dark denim jeans.

Kidman added a dark brown leather belt with an equestrian-style buckle and carried a mini embossed-leather Chloé “C” bag. Compared with the jewel-encrusted Thais sandals she would wear the following evening, the loafers gave the layered Chloé outfit a more grounded, practical finish.

The contrast also reflects the range in Kidman’s footwear choices. Her red-carpet wardrobe regularly includes narrow stilettos, pointed pumps, and barely-there sandals, but she does not rely on extra height for every appearance—even with her statuesque frame and longstanding preference for heels.

The same weekend, Kidman announced that she, Keith Urban, and their family had pledged $500,000 to support Rural Fire Services responding to the devastating Australian bushfires.

“Our family’s support, thoughts, and prayers are with everyone affected by the fires all over Australia,” she wrote on Instagram, adding that the family was donating to the Rural Fire Services working on the front lines.

From Crystal Sandals to Sharp Pumps: Nicole Kidman’s Red-Carpet Shoe Style

The Giuseppe Zanotti Thais sandals fit neatly into a footwear wardrobe that has moved between barely-there evening sandals, pointed pumps, lower heels, and highly embellished designs. Kidman’s choices tend to follow the clothes rather than compete with them: crystals add interest to restrained tailoring, slim sandals disappear beneath dramatic gowns, and sharper pumps give softer looks more structure. The examples below show how consistently she has used shoes to finish the silhouette.
