Céline Dion’s Custom Metallic Chloe Gosselin Heels Stole the 2019 Met Gala

At the 2019 Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 6, 2019, Céline Dion returned to fashion’s biggest night in one of the evening’s most theatrical looks.

Created by Oscar de la Renta for the exhibition theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” the ensemble combined Old Hollywood showgirl glamour with couture craftsmanship, while custom Chloe Gosselin T-strap heels completed the head-to-toe vision.

Designed by Oscar de la Renta creative directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the custom look drew inspiration from the extravagant Ziegfeld Follies and the 1941 musical Ziegfeld Girl, starring Judy Garland, Hedy Lamarr, and Lana Turner.

The metallic bodysuit and cascading fringe required more than 3,000 hours of handwork by 52 master embroiderers, with 18 chains, thousands of glass bugle beads, and shimmering metallic fringe bringing the 22-pound creation to life.

Rather than choosing an existing pair from her famously extensive footwear collection, Dion wore custom metallic T-strap heels by Chloe Gosselin, created specifically to complement the Oscar de la Renta couture.

Inspired by 1920s evening shoes, the silver-and-gold design featured elegant center T-straps and delicate ankle straps that echoed the movement and shimmer of the dress. Like many custom red-carpet commissions, the shoes have never been commercially released and are believed to remain part of Dion’s personal fashion archive.

The accessories were equally considered. London milliner Noel Stewart designed Dion’s dramatic feathered headpiece, treating singed peacock feathers with gold leaf to resemble sculptural antlers inspired by grand theatrical revues.

Law Roach styled the look with rare Art Deco jewelry from Fred Leighton, while makeup artist Justin St. Clair completed the transformation with metallic orange-and-gold smoky eyes, gilded brows, and dramatic lashes that embraced the evening’s camp aesthetic.

Speaking with Vogue’s Liza Koshy on the Met Gala carpet, Dion explained how the Oscar de la Renta team looked to Ziegfeld Girl and the glamour of classic Broadway revues when developing the couture look, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of the night’s most elaborate creations.
